What Are Novelty Number Plates?
Novelty number plates — sometimes called fun plates, show plates, or display plates — are custom-made plates that use the visual style of a UK number plate but with completely free-form text and styling. Because they are not tied to a DVLA-registered vehicle registration, they are not subject to the formatting restrictions of BS AU 145e. That means you can spell out a name (JAMES, BELLA, DAD), a word (LEGEND, COFFEE, TURBO), or any other text in any format you choose. You can also add a coloured border, choose a raised 3D or 4D character style, and add a badge.
The crucial thing to understand is that novelty plates are strictly for off-road use only. Displaying a non-compliant plate on a vehicle used on a public road is an offence under the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 and can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and potential vehicle seizure. Our novelty plates are clearly labelled as non-road-legal and will not pass an MOT plate inspection — but for every other purpose, from children's toys to wall art to film props, they are entirely legal to own and use.
