UK Motorcycle Number Plate Law — What Every Rider Needs to Know

Motorcycle number plate law in the UK is stricter in some respects than many riders realise. Motorcycles registered in the UK are only required to display a rear number plate — there is no legal requirement for a front plate on a motorbike. However, the rear plate must fully comply with BS AU 145e and the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 or the rider risks a fine and a failed MOT.

The most important — and most commonly broken — rule is that motorcycle registration characters must be displayed over two separate lines, not on a single line. A single-line plate, even if it uses the correct font and dimensions, is not legal on a motorcycle and will fail an MOT. This two-line format requirement exists because motorcycle plates are physically smaller than car plates; displaying all characters on one line would require them to be either too small to read or too squashed together to meet spacing requirements.

The character dimensions on motorcycle plates are also different from car plates. For bikes first registered on or after 1 September 2001 (which use the current alphanumeric format, e.g. AB21 CDE), the characters must be 64mm tall, 44mm wide (except I and 1), with a 10mm stroke, 10mm spacing between characters, and 30mm between the age identifier group and the random letters. These are meaningfully different from the 79mm character height required on car plates.

Pre-1973 (classic/vintage)79mm50mm14mm11mmN/A

Do Motorcycle Plates Need to be Yellow?

No. Motorcycles display a rear plate only, and the rear plate must have a yellow (amber) reflective background with black characters — the same as the rear plate on a car. There is no white front plate for motorcycles. The plate background must be retroreflective (i.e. it must reflect light back towards its source), which is why purely decorative or novelty plates do not meet the standard.

Can I Have 3D Gel or 4D Laser-Cut on My Motorcycle Plate?

Yes — as long as the plate is otherwise manufactured to BS AU 145e, raised-character styles are permitted on motorcycle plates. 3D gel characters (domed polyurethane resin, approx. 2mm depth) and 4D laser-cut acrylic characters (approx. 3mm depth) are both popular upgrades for motorcycle owners who want their bike to stand out. We offer both finishes on all our motorcycle plate sizes.

How to Order Your Motorcycle Plate

1

Select Motorcycle in the Builder

Choose "Motorcycle" as your vehicle type in our plate builder. The tool will automatically configure the correct two-line layout and character sizing for your bike's registration format and the size you select.

2

Verify Your Entitlement

For legal plates you must upload your verifying documents so we can confirm your entitlement. We verify quickly during business hours — usually within minutes. No documents are required for show plates.

3

Receive & Fit Your Plate

Your motorcycle plate is dispatched via tracked courier, with most orders dispatched the same day (for orders before 2pm). Fitting is straightforward — plates can be fixed to your bike's existing bracket using standard number plate screws or fixings.

Motorcycle Plate FAQs

Do motorcycles need a front number plate in the UK?
No. Under UK law (Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001), motorcycles are only required to display a rear number plate. There is no legal requirement for a front plate on a motorbike. Some riders choose to fit a front plate as a style choice, but it is not compulsory.
Why must motorcycle plates display on two lines?
The Regulations require that when a motorcycle plate is not wide enough to display all characters on a single line (which is always the case given the smaller plate format), the characters must be split over two lines. On current-format registrations (e.g., AB21 CDE), the first three characters appear on the top line (e.g., AB21) and the remaining characters on the bottom line (e.g., CDE). A single-line layout would require characters to be either illegally small or illegally spaced.
What size number plate do I need for my motorcycle?
The most common size for modern motorcycles in the UK is 9"×7" (228mm × 178mm). However, smaller bikes and scooters often use 7"×5.5" (178mm × 140mm). The correct size depends on your bike's rear number plate bracket. Check your existing plate or measure the mounting area before ordering. If in doubt, the 9"×7" fits the vast majority of UK motorcycles.
Can I use a car number plate on my motorcycle?
No. Motorcycle plates use different character dimensions from car plates (64mm tall vs. 79mm tall for post-2001 registrations). A standard car plate fitted to a motorcycle would use the wrong character sizing, making it non-compliant with BS AU 145e and therefore illegal. Additionally, a car plate would not display the registration in the mandatory two-line format for motorcycles. Always order a plate specifically designed for motorcycle use.
Will my motorcycle plate pass the MOT?
Yes — provided you choose legal plates on the builder, they are manufactured to BS AU 145e and correctly fitted to your bike. Our legal motorcycle plates are made to the correct standard, use the right character dimensions, and display the registration on two lines as required. They will pass an MOT inspection. If your current plate is failing on the grounds of illegible characters, incorrect font or incorrect format, our plates will resolve those issues.
Can I get a 3D gel or 4D plate for my motorbike?
Yes. Both 3D gel and 4D laser-cut plates are available in motorcycle sizes. When you choose legal plates on the builder they are road legal under BS AU 145e and will pass an MOT. 3D gel gives a rounded, domed gloss finish; 4D laser-cut gives a sharper, bolder raised acrylic effect. Both styles are popular with riders who want their bike to look its best. Choose your preferred style when ordering in our plate builder.
