What Are Hex Number Plates?
Hex plates are number plates with a distinctive hexagonal shape. The word “hex” refers to the shape of the plate itself — an angular, six-sided outline — not a pattern, texture or colour. Instead of the standard oblong, a hex plate has a bold geometric shape. Like our short plates, hex plates come in a range of sizes to suit the number of characters in your registration.
Hex plates are available in 4, 5, 6 and 7-character sizes, cut to fit your registration neatly. They’re popular on prestige, performance and modified vehicles where a distinctive look matters, but they suit any vehicle.
A road-legal hex plate is made to exactly the same standard as any legal plate — retro-reflective acrylic, the mandatory Charles Wright font at the correct size and spacing, and the required markings — following the same rules as our short plates. Choose legal plates on the builder and your hex plate complies with BS AU 145e. Show plates are also available for display and off-road use only.
Are Hex Plates Road Legal?
Yes — when you choose legal plates on the builder. A road-legal hex plate uses the correct Charles Wright font, character size and spacing, and a white (front) or yellow (rear) reflective background, exactly like a standard plate — the only difference is the hexagonal shape. It reads clearly for a police officer or ANPR camera from 20 metres and passes an MOT.
If you choose a show plate instead of a legal plate, it is for display or off-road use only and is not road legal.

Hex Number Plate FAQs
Are hex plates legal in the UK?
Yes — when you choose legal plates on the builder. A road-legal hex plate uses the correct Charles Wright font, character size and spacing, and a reflective background, just like a standard plate — only the shape is different. It reads clearly from 20 metres for police and ANPR. Show plates are also available for display / off-road use only.
Will a hex plate pass an MOT?
Yes — a road-legal hex plate meets the required standard and reads clearly, so it passes an MOT plate check. Show plates are not road legal and will not pass an MOT.
Can ANPR cameras read hex plates?
Yes — a road-legal hex plate uses standard black Charles Wright characters on a reflective background, which ANPR cameras read normally.
Do hex plates cost more than standard plates?
Pricing depends on the size and character style (standard, 3D gel or 4D). Use our plate builder to see the current price for your combination.
What vehicles suit hex plates best?
Hex plates are particularly popular on prestige saloons, SUVs, supercars, and modified/tuned vehicles where aesthetics are important. That said, they look great on any vehicle — there is no rule about which car types can have hex plates. If you want a premium look for your everyday hatchback, hex works just as well.
Can I get a hex plate with a flag or national identifier?
Yes — a road-legal hex plate can include the optional national identifier panel (Union Flag, St George’s Cross, Saltire, Red Dragon, or GB) on the left, just like any legal plate.
Is a hex plate the same as a 3D or 4D plate?
No — these are different things. Hex is the shape of the plate; 3D gel and 4D laser-cut are the character style (raised lettering). You can combine a hex-shaped plate with standard, 3D gel or 4D characters in our plate builder.
